Monument record TQ 87 SW 1051 - Location of a former farmstead, Oakham Marsh, Hoo St. Werburgh

Summary

The remains of a farmstead on Oakham Ness can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946. Improvements to the land and permanent settlement were made possible on Oakham Ness by the building of these sea defences (see NMR 1540819). An area on the south-western side of the marsh was enclosed by a series of drainage channels. Within this area were a group of buildings, including a sheepfold, and a pond. By 1896 the buildings had been replaced by others further to then north east but still within the channel-defined area; it is one of these later buildings that is still visible on the 1946 air photos. Improvements to the land were made by the digging of drainage channels across some fields at the southern end of Oakham Ness. By 1908 the sea wall had been breached at the south-west near the farm buildings. The sea has further encroached on Oakham Ness since 1946 and the area is gradually eroding away or returning to saltings and the building no longer survives. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
