Full Description
A castleated trench system was formerly located near the coast at Birchington. Identified from aerial photographs during an assessment of the north Kent coast by Wessex Archaeology. (1)
The earthwork traces of a length of castellated Second World War trench was visible on RAF aerial photograph - RAF/26J/BR194 VC 4 10-JAN-1941 around the headland west of Epple Bay. Constructed to facilitate concealed troop movements along the cliff top between gun emplacements and protect the incised access path through the cliffs to the beach. These features were mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024. Now infilled (2-3)
