Monument record TQ 87 SW 1017 - The earthwork remains of an approximately circular enclosure on Stoke Saltings
Summary
The earthwork remains of an approximately circular enclosure on Stoke Saltings can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2007. This possible post medieval livestock enclosure is defined by an earthwork bank which could have functioned as a sea wall during higher tides and provided a dry area for livestock that were grazing the saltings. The earthwork encloses an area approximately 9m in diameter. Grazing on the saltings must have largely been abandoned by 1896 by which time a considerable area of saltings had been removed (the mud was used in the manufacture of Portland cement). This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
