Monument record TQ 77 NE 1006 - Site of Egypt Bay Coastguard Station, Egypt Bay, St. Mary Hoo

Summary

A coastguard station at Egypt Bay is marked on the 1894 Ordnance Survey map. The station appears to have comprised of two parts, a building and presumably a permanently moored ship. The building was positioned between the sea wall and the delph with the ship moored on the other side of the sea wall in a narrow channel that ran along the very edge of Egypt Saltings hard against the sea wall. Based on the Ordnance Survey map depiction the vessel measured circa 15m by 5m. The site is named as The Kite Coast Guard Station and it is likely that the name Kite was derived from the name of the boat; the 1861 census records a HMS Kite at Egypt Bay. The Royal Navy had five ships named Kite that went out of service between the 1790s and the 1850s but it is not certain which one of these went to Egypt Bay. The majority are far too big and two are known to have been broken up. The most likely vessel from this list is a Nightingale Class cutter in service from 1817. It is closest in size (at circa 19m by 6m) and its fate is unknown, beyond still being in service in 1838. No coastguard station is marked on the 1897 Ordnance Survey map and neither the building nor the ship are depicted. his site was mapped from the Ordnanace Survey Map as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
