Monument record TQ 87 SW 1038 - Site of a Cement Works, Bishop Saltings, Gillingham

Summary

A cement Works on Bishop Saltings is visible on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map (c.1858-1873). There is no trace of this on any of the subsequent editions. A survey in 2004 identified a number of associated features. Brick footings, concrete structures and upright timbers, interpreted as a probable wharf facility, were all recorded as well as large amounts of brick and other debris.

Full Description

Cement Works, present on 1st ed OS 6 inch (1) but not marked on the 2nd ed OS. Associated features comprise brick footings, concrete structures and probable wharf facility. Large amounts of brick and other debris lie nearby and some structures survive in plan - particularly a brick built structure consisting of two semi circular platforms and the remains of two concrete rectangular structures. Some upright timbers were noted on the foreshore. (2)
