Monument record TQ 87 SW 1073 - Former Wharf, Stoke Saltings

Summary

A Wharf is marked on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey map (c.1891-1898) at Stoke Saltings. The outline of the wharf and some remnants of structural timbers were evident during an assessment of the north Kent coast by Wessex Archaeology in 2004. The remains of a late 19th century wharf can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946. This wharf was situated on a channel that fed in to Damhead Creek and was first depicted on an 1896 Ordnance Survey map. Access to this wharf was originally provided by the sea defences which had been widened for this purpose. Access was subsequently via a causeway (NMR 1541662). A track on the same course is depicted by the Ordnance Survey in 1908. The rebuilding of the sea defences here after the 1953 flood separated the wharf from the causeway and it is likely that it was no longer in use by that date. The slight remains of this wharf are still visible on aerial photographs taken in 1993. This feature was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
