Monument record TQ 87 SW 1074 - Post Medieval Wharf, Stoke Saltings, Hoo St. Werburgh

Summary

The remains of a late 19th century wharf can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946. This wharf was situated on a channel that fed in to Damhead Creek and was first depicted on an 1896 Ordnance Survey map. Access to this wharf was provided by a causeway across the marshes (NMR 1541592), a track on the same course is also depicted by the Ordnance Survey. The rebuilding of the sea defences here after the 1953 flood separated the wharf from the causeway and though access was still possible it may no longer have been in use by that date. The slight remains of this wharf are still visible on aerial photographs taken in 1993. This feature was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
