Monument record TQ 87 SW 1080 - possible post medieval livestock enclosure can be seen on Oakham Ness

Summary

The earthwork remains of a possible post medieval livestock enclosure can be seen on Oakham Ness on aerial photographs taken in 1946. An earthwork embankment connects the northern side of this curvilinear enclosure to the remains of the post medieval sea wall. This enclosure is similar to one seen on Stoke Saltings (NMR 1538299) and may pre-date the sea defences and been built when the Oakham Ness was still saltings. The northern embankment may represent an earlier course of the sea wall or possibly be the remains of a causeway across the saltings that provided access to this enclosure. The south western corner of this earthwork was destroyed ib the building of Oakham Ness jetty (NMR 1537943). This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
