Summary

The Gillingham Portland Cement Works is marked on the Ordnance Survey historic edition maps (c.1858-1940). The site is still used as a 'works' although the extent to which the original buildings survive is unknown.

Full Description

Portland Cement Works identified on the 1st ed. OS map (1). Also marked on the 2nd 3rd and 4th edition OS maps (2).
Erected in 1874 by George Burge jnr, William Morgan and C R Cheffins . Was equipped after 1872 with chamber kilns of the type patented by George Burge. 1895 taken over by J B White and then APCM remaining open to about 1908. .(3)

The works included an industrial tramway that worked from 1874 to 1908. (4)
