Monument record TQ 67 SW 1051 - Neolithic flints and pottery (and possibly Mesolithic flint scatter), Ebbsfleet Site 2

Summary

Excavations in 1938 by Burchell and in 1960 by Sieveking found evidence of two working floors. Both were interpreted by Burchell as Mesolithic but the 1960 excavation strongly suggested that at least one was Neolithic in date. Location accurate to 100m based on available information

Full Description

Archaeological Site at TQ 6159 7308 The site was originally recorded by Burchell as containing two Mesolithic floors. The uppermost of these floors was again recorded in 1960 in running water silts, and in a loam covered occupation level on the margin of the river. The stratigraphical positon of the "floor", lying at the base of a series of silts and detrital muds, is strikingly similar to that at Site 1, approx. 1/4-mile way. When examined over a wider area than was possible by Major Burchell in 1938 this floor was found to contain a small proportion of microliths, a large collection of flint waste of markedly microlithic aspect, leaf-shaped arrowheads and fragments of coarse pottery, nearly all undecorated. It is in fact, another Neolithic industry related to that of Site 1. Associated with this industry are the bones of a number of animals including oxen provisionally identified as Bos Primigenus (7)
