Full Description

Possible Roman pottery kiln sites at Milfordhope are listed as follows:-

Area centred approximately TQ 86156940. Pottery, including local-type ware, dating from the mid-late 1st century was found by G.H. Wilby in 1962. Probable kiln in vicinity.

Unlocated, but possibly in same general area as previous site. Patches of burnt earth, ash, pottery, `kiln bricks' salting or pottery manufacture. The site is probably now destroyed by tidal erosion.

Area centred TQ 8669. Probable kiln site with salting and settlement nearby. Limited salvage excavation by the Upchurch Archaeological Research Group in 1962-4.
