In August 1893 CE Woodruff excavated at the slight mound on the left hand side of the road to Greenborough (the Strayway) not far from the Stayhills Marsh (1). At a depth of about 7' he found a rubbish pit. (2) About 50 yards from the rubbish pit Woodruff found at a depth of 3' a sepulchral deposit comprising the lower half of a large urn containing calcined bones. Near it were two Upchurch jars, a Samian patera stamped TRITVSI, a Samian cup stamped FELIX, and many fragments of Samian ware, some repaired, including one bearing the stamp SAXAM.
