Monument record TR 26 NW 1086 - Medieval salt mound, Chislet Marshes, Chislet parish

Summary

The remains of a medieval salt mound located on Chislet Marshes. The site was formerly part of the old Wantsum Channel which divided Thanet from the mainland. One of 50 large saltworking mounds located in this area. They resemble medieval salt-working mounds at Seasalter (see TR 06 SE 6), and the Isles of Sheppey and Harty. Most of the mounds are plough damaged but some well surviving examples remain. 13th and 14th century pottery sherds have been found on some of these mounds. Burnt earth and oyster shells have been found at all of them. The mounds were formed from waste sludge collected during spring tides: brine was extracted from this sludge and then evaporated to produce salt. The Chislet salt works are mentioned in the Domesday book. A Saltern of Medieval date was visible as a earthwork on RAF/106G/UK/1724 RP 3030 10-SEP-1946 and later visible as an earthwork on LIDAR Environment Agency DTM 02-DEC-2019. This is one of a group of six adjacent mounds mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024.
