Full Description
41 pieces of wood were recovered from trenches 1, 2, 8, 9 and 11. The assemblage included two stakes, three possible 'sails' of wattle panel, three pieces of chopped roundwood, one possible broken artefact and several pieces of natural debris. (1)
Tr 1 - single worked fragment obliquely chopped on one face.
Tr 2 - one large piece of natural unworked oak
Tr 8 - eight pieces of wood found - three have one end chopped - possibly 'sails'
Tr 9 - the peat contained much unworked wood
Tr 11 - There were five worked pieces among the twelve wood items retrieved in Tr 11. The worked wood was rcovered from the fluvial coarse silt sand deposits 1111,1112,1113 and 1115 which are all above layer 1119 dated to the early - mid- Neolithic by ebbsfleet pottery. From 1113 is a chopped piece of compressed roundwood, 438 x 31 x32m, which has dished and heavily straited axe-facets which may reflect the use of an unpolished flint axe. This suggestion of a Neolithic date can only be very tentative since this type of toolmark is not replicated by other piece of assemblage. The item from deposit 1112 is afragment of probable artefact measuring 115 x 100 x 52mm. The oak implement has toolmarks across all of its surviving surfaces although it is unclear what this may represent. There is also a poorly preserved tip of probable oak stake from deposit 1111. (1)
