Monument record TQ 66 NE 225 - Possible lynchet?, Cobham Park

Summary

An earthwork bank in Lady Darnley's Garden, Cobham Hall believed to predate the later emparkment. This feature was identified during a survey of the gardens in 2003. The feature may be related to pre park agricultural landscape, in particular a series of parallel earthworks running on the same alignment to the South East of Cobham Hall.

Full Description

An earthwork terrace that runs along the southern edge of Lady Darnley's Garden, Cobham Hall. It is defined by a 1.60m high scarp, which has been reshaped several times in the later development of the gardens. It is suggested that the feature predates the later gardens as it is on a completely different alignment to the hall itself as well as the gardens. It is likely to have been part of a pre Park agricultural landscape, perhaps representing a field boundary or the edge of a roadway. Recent Aerial photo evidence notes a series of parallel banks running on the same alignment as the terrace to the south east of the hall, which appear to be related to a 'D' shaped enclosure and associated earthworks believed to be Romano British in date. Mid - Late Bronze Age material has also been found during excavations at this latter location (TQ 66 NE 68) [1]
