Full Description
During an archaeological evaluation at Ebbsfleet in 2005 three features with a possible roman date were uncovered. The features were cut into colluvium and were concentrated at the northern end of the trench (Trench 1). They consisted of a small shallow gully aligned NW-SE, a small shallow post hole and an elongated feature which was only partially exposed. The latter was party excavated to a depth of 0.2m which revealed comparatively steep sides. The feature most likely represents a terminating ditch. Early Roman courseware pottery was recovered from within the fills. the observations closely resemble those made during the 1997 evaluation of the area which was situated to the south east. It is possible that the gully represents a continuation of a gully observed in this earlier excavation and that the postholes form a linear structure such as a fenceline running alongside it. The features probably represent property delineations set back from the road to the west, similar to those exposed during the Springhead nursery excavations undertaken to the south. (1)
