Full Description

During an archaeological evaluation undertaken at Ebbsfleet in 2005, a total of 23 discreet features were uncovered representing the presence of a cremation cemetery. The features were mostly small and roughly circular in plan, they are suggestive of the presence of buried vessels, some seemingly set in groups. In several places machining exposed vessel remains and burnt bone deposits without vessels were also observed in two places suggesting that at least part of the cemetery contains cremated remains. Fourteen of the features appeared to cut through buried soil while the remaining nine were cut into the natural chalk. Artefacts and vessels recovered were of a Roman date between the 1st and 3rd centuries. (1)
