Full Description

Second World War gun emplacement on the golf course at Joss Bay, mapped from aerial photographs taken in May 1942 [1]. This solitary gun emplacement is 7.5m in diameter and is located behind an extensive area of coastal defence features (MWX43005).

This feature was first seen on aerial photographs taken in January 1941 [6]. It continued to appear on photographs taken throughout the war, but by August 1947 [4] it appears to have been filled in. On the Channel Coastal Observatory's aerial photography from 2001, 2005 [2 & 3] and the most recent taken between 2008 and 2009 [4], the remnants of the gun emplacement still look partially visible. It is therefore likely that remains of this military feature may still exist on the rough of the golf course.

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [7].
