Full Description

Second World War public air-raid shelter and associated military structure, located to the west of Broadstairs Harbour in the Memorial Recreation Ground, and has been mapped from military aerial photographs taken in 1942.

The shelter is an earth covered rectangular building measuring 35m by 18m, with two entrances on either side of the structure leading down into the shelter as stepping. A structure is visible 20m to the south-east of the shelter, measuring 6.5m by 3.5m and is presumably a military structure associated with the shelter.

Both features were mapped from photographs taken in May 1942 [1]. However, the shelter is first visible in December 1941 [2] and the building is constructed some time after and is first visible by May 1942. Both are still visible in April 1946 [3], but are both gone by December 1960 [4].

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [5].

The Second World War air raid shelter is visible as an extant structure on RAF/58/688 Vp1 5026 23-MAY-1951. The feature has been demolished on Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 07-APR-2021. (6-7)
