Full Description

Second World War coastal defence features constructed to restrict the access on land from the beach at Stone Gap, Broadstairs, and mapped from military aerial photographs taken in 1942. The military features include two structures on the headland to the south, one on the headland to the north, and a structural barrier across the entrance on land from the beach.

The most northern structure measures 4m squared and the two structures to the south measure 5m by 4.5m and 7m by 5m. The barrier at the foot of the cliff is 10m long.

The features are first visible on photographs taken in May 1942 [1]. The northern most building is gone by April 1946 [2], whereas the two on the southern headland are still visible by April 1950 [3]. A building still exists in 2001 and may be the larger of these two structures [4].

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [5].
