Full Description

WWII coastal military defences, including a gun emplacement, a building and several rectangular hard standings, a square walled structure (possible gun emplacement) and slit trenching, located south of Dumpton Gap, and mapped from aerial photographs taken in 1941 and 1942.

The earliest features are first visible in January 1941 [1] and include a circular gun emplacement with a central pintle measuring 9m in diameter, a slit trench and associated bank measuring 12m in length and a square open structure, possibly functioning as another gun emplacement measuring 5m in length.

By May 1942 [2] the square gun emplacement has been removed. However, a structure has been constructed beside the slit trench (5m to the east) measuring 5m by 3.5m, and four rectangular areas of hard standing are visible in a row to the south of the slit trenching that range from to 3.5-6m long and 3-5m wide.

By April 1936 [3] the circular gun emplacement and the military building have been removed, and by August 1947 [4] the hard standing features and the slit trenching are also gone.

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [5].
