Full Description

WWII military complex of structures, gun pits and barbed wire, located in playing fields west of Ramsgate and visible on military aerial photographs, and built over by June 1980 [4].

At the core of the military installation are three larger buildings and two much smaller buildings. The largest structures measure 12m by 6m, 4.7m by 4m, and 3.4m and 3m, whilst the two smaller buildings measure 2.5m by 2 and 1.5m by 1.2m. These are first visible on aerial photographs taken in February 1941 [1], but were mapped from a series taken in May 1942 [2]. By April 1946 [3] the arrangement and quantity of the structures has changed, and include a possible air raid shelter. By June 1980 [4] they have all been built over by a housing development.

The buildings are enclosed by barbed wire with short gaps for access. These barbed wire obstructions are first visible on photographs taken in February 1941 [1] and were mapped from a series taken in May 1942 [2], but have been removed by June 1980 [4]. Another length of barbed wire was added some time after May 1942 and before April 1946, measuring 22m. A gun pit is also constructed during this period with an interior diameter of 2m (637347E, 164460N).

Two gun pits constructed using sand bags are visible to the north of the barbed wire enclosure. These features were first visible in February 1941 [1] and were mapped from a series taken in May 1942 [2]. This photo also shows that the eastern gun pit has an additional bank around it.

Forty metres to the north of the barbed wire enclosure is another large building, measuring 14m by 9.5m that is not on the OS mapping either previous to or after WWII and so is thought to be associated with this military site. It is visible from February 1941 [1] through to September 1962 [5] and is built over by June 1980 [4].

Pathways are visible linking the structures enclosed by the barbed wire on photographs from 1941 [1] and 1946 [3], however on photographs from 1942 [2] the path extends to the NE past the structure described above reaching the boundary of the housing.

It is possible that this military complex could be MON 1477755/NMR NUMBER TR 36 SE 466, a Coastal Defence/Chain Home Low Standing M6 since a point for this record lies 90m to the east of the barbed wire enclosure.
