Full Description
WWII military installation comprising slit trenching, gun pits, military buildings and barbed wire, located on the coast west of Pegwell and visible on military aerial photographs.
The military aerial photographs imply that this small military base has had two phases of activity. The first phase is visible on the earliest series of photographs taken in February 1941 [1] and comprise a central slit trench and associated bank on the landward side, measuring 56m, that is backfilled by May 1942 [2]. This earthwork feature is enclosed by barbed wire on all sides, with a second line to the north and west. Two smaller lengths of zigzagged slit trenching are also visible to the SW of the enclosure, measuring 12m and 19m. These trenches are visible until at least 1948 and are definitely gone by April 1950 [3]. A small circular gun pit is also visible in between the two short lengths of slit trenching, with an internal diameter of 1.3m. This feature has been replaced by a military building measuring 2.4m squared by May 1942 [2] and is still present until September 1962 [4].
The second phase of activity is first visible on photographs taken in April 1946 [5] so may have occurred anytime after May 1942. This phase sees the re-cutting of the slit trench within the barbed wire enclosure, both of which remain until September 1948 [6]. A military building has also been built that is visible at the SE corner of the barbed wire enclosure, measuring 12m by 5.5m. This structure remains until April 1950 [3]. A circular gun pit has also been constructed to the west of the barbed wire enclosure, with an internal diameter of 2.75m. This feature remains visible until Sept 1948 [6].
