Full Description
WWII anti-aircraft battery, situated on St Augustine's Golf Course, Pegwell Bay, visible on military aerial photographs taken in 1944.
Five gun emplacements are visible on photographs taken in April 1944 [1]. They vary between sub-circular and sub-rectangular in plan, measuring around 10m by 8m and 6m squared. It is possible to see a central pintle on three of the emplacements and blast protecting banking around all of them.
One L-shaped slit trench is visible to the west of the gun emplacements, measuring 7m long, surrounded on its eastern edge with an earthen bank.
To the north of the military site are 21 sub-rectangular military features measuring 5m by 3m, grouped together in threes. It is unclear what these features are from the only photograph they appear on [1], but are presumably associated with the battery and other military operations in the area.
There are several temporary and more permanent buildings and tents around the site, the quantity, size and location of which would have changed depending on the needs of the battery. Roads are also present linking this site to what looks like the mess and communications areas to the NW of the site and extends to the east towards the coast.
The battery was first visible on, and has been mapped from, photographs taken in April 1944 [1], and appears dismantled by January 1946 [2] and is entirely gone by April 1950.
