Full Description
Area of sand extraction dating to WWII, located east of Great Stonar within a military training area, and mapped from military aerial photographs taken in February 1941 [1]. Eight rectangular mounds of varying sizes are apparent across this area, measuring no more than 15m by 10m. Alongside these mounds are several shallow excavated hollows, presumably from where the sand has been extracted.
This area of activity is first visible by February 1941 [1] and the location of the mounds and hollows change throughout the war until April 1950 [2] when activity is still apparent in the area but the sand extraction pits have been levelled.
