Full Description
WWII complex of military features, east of Sandwich, mapped from military aerial photographs. Features include up to 12 discrete features composed of banked up material that form curvilinear and sub-rectangular enclosures. They have entrances and either a flat base or an excavated area on the interior. These features measure between around 10m and 15m and are thought to be ammunition stores.
A barbed wire enclosure is visible to the east of the ammunition stores measuring just over 0.5km long. A single square gun pit measuring 3m on the interior is visible within the enclosure from a photograph taken in January 1945 [1]. It is possible that this is the remains of the heavy anti-aircraft battery (AMIE number 1472154). Tracks are visible across the site linking up the barbed wire enclosure and the ammunitions storage area.
These features are first visible and were mapped from aerial photographs taken in January 1945 [1]. They are no longer visible by Janary 1946 [2]. The position of the features may be slightly inaccurate due to difficulties rectifying the photographs.
