Full Description
Four circular mounds and one elongated oval mound, visible as earthworks are located in a field to the east of North Stream, NE of Worth, in the Lydden Valley. They are interpreted as haystack stances and have been mapped from military aerial photographs taken in January 1945 [1]. By April 1950 [2] the mounds are no longer visible. The diameter of the circular features measure between 8-10m, while the elongated oval feature measures 18m by 4m. They are lie in a NW-SE alignment 250m to the east of a river. Haystack mounds are used for the drying and storage of hay within damp environments such as this river meadow, and many other similar features have been recorded across the Stour Valley landscape.
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
