Full Description

Three WWII barbed wire enclosures are visible on aerial photographs located east of Worth in the Lydden Valley. The northern enclosure measures c.240m by c.160m and lies on either side of the railway track. The central enclosure measures c.230m by c.110m and lies on either side of the railway track and a section of river (North Stream). The southern enclosure measures c.340m by c.210214m and there is a break in the barbed wire due to the North Stream river. Although no features are visible within these enclosures on the photographs used to map them, it is likely that the enclosures functioned as defensive measures associated with the observation and control of routes inland, via the railway and the river systems.

The northern and central enclosures were first visible and digitised from aerial photographs taken in January 1945 [1] and are gone by April 1946 [2]. Whereas the southern enclosure was first visible and digitised from a series of photographs taken in April 1946 [3] (a run from Jan 1945 did not cover the southern enclosure) and is gone by September 1946 [4].

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
