Full Description
WWII anti-aircraft battery located south of Worth and mapped from military aerial photographs taken in September 1946 [1,2]. It is situated in a former chalk quarry, Hacklinge Holes, and makes use of the road into the quarry and the structures that were already there prior to the war.
The battery is first visible in April 1946 [3] and comprises four circular gun emplacements that have a diameter of 10m and in two cases have a central pintle for attaching the guns to. These structures are being dismantled by April 1950 [8] and are gone by July 1977 [7]. Several buildings are associated with the battery; the ones closest are already present on the Epoch 4 Ordnance Survey historic mapping [1,2]. Three of these buildings are removed some time between September 1946 [4] and August 2003 [5,6], and two are still present in August 2003 [5,6].
Two square structures are also present to the SW of the AA site and measure c.3.5m by 3.5m. They are first present in April 1946 [3] and the southern one is gone by April 1950 [8] whereas the northern one is gone by July 1977 [7].
