Full Description

A dry, Y-shaped, depression is visible in this field on 1940s RAF vertical aerial photographs [1]. It is 100m long and measures 13m across at its narrow, eastern end, and flares out to 60m wide at its western end. The flared end is adjacent to a field drain and it is possible that the depression joins into this drain. This drain is shown on historic Ordnance Survey mapping [2] but examination of recent aerial photographs indicates that it has since been removed and the depression itself levelled [3].

This feature may represent a former drainage channel which may be associated with the reclamation of land from the Wantsum Channel during the medieval and earlier post-medieval periods.

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [4].
