Full Description

WWII coastal defence feature comprising four circular gun emplacements (with internal diameters of between 2-4m) surrounding a length of slit trenching (32m) enclosed with over 800m of barbed wire. The features are located on a naturally raised area of the coast along Sandwich Bay and have been mapped from military aerial photographs taken in August 1941 [1], the earliest photographs on which they are visible. The features enclosed by the barbed wire are no longer visible by August 1943 [2], whilst the barbed wire remains until prior to September 1946 [3] when it has also been removed.
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
