Full Description

Two phases of WWII observation posts facing onto Sandwich Bay and mapped from military aerial photographs. The initial slit trench and associated bank feature appears to have been constructed in a former sand bunker on the golf course and were first visible and have been mapped from military photographs taken in August 1943 [1]. The trench is under 10m long and is entirely surrounded by an earthern bank. This feature has been levelled by September 1946 [2] whilst another more substantial observation post has been constructed 100m to the NW. This comprises a narrow ditch, 18m long, enclosed on the landward side by a bank and beside a structural platform on the seaward side. It is no longer visible by June 1980 [3].
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
