Full Description
Seven WWII bomb craters are visible as slight earthworks on 1940s RAF vertical aerial photographs. They lie in a wide arc that runs from Ash Road to Woodnesborough Road and are likely to be the result of a single stick of bombs dropped during a bombing raid. The features appear to have since been plough-levelled and are not visible as earthworks on recent aerial photography [3-4].
Both the easternmost two craters and the westernmost two craters are much more widely spaced (c.250m apart) than the other craters (130-180m apart). This may suggest that there are unexploded bombs lying within these apparent "gaps".
These features were mapped at 1:2500 scale from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Richborough Environs Project. The transcriptions produced by the project were added to those produced by the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment (2009-10), see Associated Events. The resulting transcriptions exist as a GIS layer held by this HER [5].
