Full Description

WWII possible minefield visible on aerial photography taken in 1942 and 1946 [1, 2, 3], located in Kingsdown. The features were visible as small banks with structures atop them, each measuring roughly 5m x 2m. A larger group of 27 banks were seen to the south, with a smaller group of ten to the north; these were separated by a house and grounds. The southern group measured 140m x 40m, while the northern measures 70m x 45m. These mines were not visible on aerial photography taken in 1941 [4]. The southern features were not visible on aerial photography taken in 1980 [5], while the site of the northern features had been built upon.

These features lay 190m NE of a large number of craters which may have been the result of practice mine detonations. The site also lay 390m S of practice trenches; thus it is likely that this possible minefield was created as a practice exercise.

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
