Full Description
Complex of WWII military features comprising trenching, barbed wire and small gun emplacements, located on the northern outskirts of Deal.
The features were mapped from military aerial photographs. A majority of the features were first visible on photographs taken in February 1941 [1] and include four slit trench and bank earthworks that are situated no more than 300m apart, and have lengths of either trench or bank radiating from the centre of each feature. Their maximum length measures between 20m and 42m. These features are backfilled by February 1946 [2] and are no longer visible by April 1950 [3]. Closer to the seafront are three more slit trench features with associated gun pits. The northern feature (637598E, 154119N) is a stepped slit trench (30m long) that appears to be surrounded with a wall. This feature is no longer visible by April 1950 [3]. Another slit trench to the south measures 64m and is entirely surrounded by banking. At its northern extent is a circular gun pit with an internal diameter of just under 2m. These two features are no longer visible by February 1942 [4]. Another trench is visible with a gun emplacement and pintle incorporated into its eastern extent. The feature measures just under 20m and the pintle has a diameter of around 2.3m. This feature is no longer visible by August 1941 [5].
Several lengths of barbed wire are visible across the site, forming enclosures and linears. It is first visible by February 1941 [1] and more is laid down in August 1941 [5]. The barbed wire is removed over a period between September 1946 [6] and April 1950 [3]. An open rectangular gun emplacement is visible at the join of two lengths of barbed wire (637510E, 154183N) and measures 6.5m by 3.5m. This feature is first visible by February 1941 [1] and is gone by February 1946 [2].
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
