Full Description

Circular gun emplacement or machine gun position situated in close proximity to a number of World War Two features and structures at Swingate and 200m north of Langdon Cliffs East Dover. Four closely spaced sub-circular embankments measuring between 8m and 9m in diameter were positioned extremely close in December 1945 photographs from which this feature was mapped [1].

The gun position itself was approximately 5.2m wide from outer wall to outer wall and possibly built of sandbags.
A line of barbed wire ran from south west to north east enclosing a much large military complex on Langdon Cliffs [3]. This barbed wire was fragmented but still in a similar position in December 1945 [1]. The gun position was demolished between August 1954 [2] and August 1968 [3].

Type 24 Pillbox situated in close proximity to a number of World War Two features and structures at Swingate and 200m north of Langdon Cliffs East Dover. Four closely spaced sub-circular embankments measuring between 8m and 9m in diameter were positioned extremely close in photographs when the Pillbox was mapped in December 1945 [1], these embankments may have been used to house munitions or expelled cartridges from the Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery on St Margaret's-at-Cliffe Mke19901.

However the Pillbox was not observed in aerial photography from December 1941, but a sub-circular embankment was positioned in the exact place the Type 24 pillbox was to later stand [2].

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
