Summary

WWII banked gun emplacement visible on aerial photography taken in 1946, located in St Margaret’s at Cliffe. The emplacement was located 4m from the cliff edge. It was still visible in 1949 and 1950, but not in 2007, as the cliff had eroded. St Margaret’s Bay Coastal Battery (MWX43502) was located SW of this feature.

Full Description

WWII gun emplacement visible on aerial photography taken in 1946 [1], located in St Margaret’s at Cliffe. The banked feature was 7m in diameter with walls 1.5 – 2.5m thick. The emplacement was located 4m from the cliff edge. This site was still visible on aerial photographs taken in 1949 and 1950 [2, 3]. It was not visible on Next Perspectives photography taken in 2007 [4] as the cliff had eroded.

St Margaret’s Bay Coastal Battery (MWX43502) was located 160m SW of this feature. This emplacement likely formed part of the defences for the larger site.
