Full Description
Two WWII defence features situated on the beach at Deal. The features appear to be zigzagged in plan and have some height. It is possible that these features are anti-tank blocks, however it is not clear from the photography so they have been mapped as a structure line since the landward extent is not clear.
The northern feature measures 240m and is within the northern extent of the barbed wire enclosure associated with Deal coastal battery (MKE16748), and the southern feature has a total length of 526m, but a gap is apparent for the slipway used by the lifeboat station (637816E, 151537N), and it curves rather than zigzags around a pillbox (637805E, 151449N) further south.
These features have been mapped from military aerial photographs. The northern feature is first visible in August 1943 [1] whilst the southern one is first visible in August 1941 [2]. They are both no longer apparent by February 1946 [3].
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
