Full Description
A hexagonal WWII pillbox is visible on the beach south of Dover Castle and associated with a circular fox hole/gun pit. The pillbox is unclear on aerial photographs but is thought to measure around 7m by 6.5m. The circuclar ditch feature thought to be a fox hole or gun pit is located 5m to the NE of the pillbox and measures 2.15m in diameter without an encircling bank.
These features have been mapped from military aerial photographs taken in August 1941 [1], although the pillbox is visible since February 1941 [2]. The circular ditch has been backfilled by August 1943 [3] whilst the pillbox is no longer observed on photographs taken in February 1946 [4].
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
