Full Description
A collection of nine WWII air raid shelters visible in 1945 [1], located in Dover. These banked features spanned an area 270m x 120m. Eight of the shelters were on average 13.5m x 7.5m; six of these were arranged in pairs with one shelter in the N and one S. Two such shelters were joined by two slit trenches which run NNW-SSE. Two shelters were slightly smaller and sit alone, though the W shelter was accompanied by a small building. The ninth shelter was visible from 1945, has dimensions of 34.5m x 15m and may represent either a shelter or underground storage depot. The remains of the two NNW-SSE ditches could just be seen on Next Perspectives photography taken in 2007 [2], none of the banked features could be determined, despite the area having been given over to grassland.
A similar shelter (NMR467930 and MKE6994) was located 220m to the SW of this area.
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
