Full Description
Small WWII military site visible on aerial photographs taken in 1941 and 1946 [1, 2] and located in South Foreland. Eight structures were present, with maximum dimensions between 11m and 3.5m, along with adjoining pathways. A ditch with flanking banks 12m long in total formed an L-shape to the SW of the site. The site was still visible on aerial photographs taken in 1949 [3], but was absent on Next Perspectives photography taken in 2007 [4].
Close to the site location is a NMR point for a Coastal Defence/Chain Home Low radar station (NMR1477643). There is insufficient information to determine whether this site has any link to the record, but it is possible that the site’s function was related. Just to the NE of the site lay a barrage balloon site (MWX43571). To the N lay Wanstone Battery (MKe17934) and to the SW was Fan Bay Battery (Mke41970).
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
