Full Description

WWII barrage balloon site visible on aerial photographs taken in 1941 and 1946 [1, 2] and located in South Foreland. This site was comprised of a barrage balloon launching site, one structure and a series of banked and ditched earthworks. The barrage balloon site was 60m in diameter and was located to the N of the associated structure and earthworks. A structure 4m x 4m was alongside three enclosing banks with deep interior ditches. A rectangular area of probable hard standing measuring 12m x 6m, which may represent a building foundation lay alongside a bank. A wide, irregularly shaped ditch, partially enclosed by a bank and with three linear banks running NE-SW from it also lay to the S. Two groups of earthworks formed of banks and ditches less than 2m wide were located to the S of the barrage balloon mooring. In total the site spanned 130m x 110m. The site was still visible on aerial photography taken in 1949 [3], but was no longer visible on Next Perspectives photography taken in 2007 [4].

The features lay NE of a small military site (MWX43570) and Fan Bay Battery (Mke41970). To the N lay Wanstone Battery (MKe17934) and the Martin Mill Military Railway (MKe17265). Bomb craters also lay between these sites (MWX43566).

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
