Full Description

Two lengths of WWII barbed wire visible on aerial photography taken in 1942 and 1945 [1, 2, 3, and 4], located in Dover. These entanglements encircled the outer defences of Western Heights (MKE7019 and NMR 468101). As Western Heights was a large site which has already been mapped it has been excluded from the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey; therefore the full extent of the barbed wire was not mapped.

The westernmost line of barbed wire was mapped from aerial photography taken in 1945 [1], this represented a bowed single line of barbed wire. This feature in 1942 [2] was visible as a straight line of wire; thus the most complex incarnation of the feature was mapped. The easternmost line of barbed wire was visible on aerial photographs taken in 1942 and 1945 [3 and 4] as a single line of wire, its position did not alter between these photographs. Both these features were not visible on Next Perspectives photography taken in 2003 [5 and 6].

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
