Full Description
Probable WWII earthworks visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 [1], located in Walmer. These features were not visible on aerial photography taken in 1942 [2]. Six banks all less than 2m wide were seen in an area of sparse woodland measuring 37 x 38m. These were not present on historic OS mapping dating to 1938 [3]; thus these were either created in WWII, or were previously hidden within the woodland. The area was seen to still be sparsely wooded on Next Perspectives photography taken in 2003 [4], but the banks were not visible.
To the WNW were located two WWII military camps (Mke41957) (MWX43651) and to the S were a collection of WWII defensive features around Walmer Castle (MWX43652). To the N lay a probable gun emplacement (MWX43654) and a single line of barbed wire (MWX43655).
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
