Full Description
WWII pillbox and associated structures visible on aerial photography taken in 1942 and 1943 [1 and 2], located along the beach at Walmer. The pillbox measured 5.4m in diameter, thought its shape could not be accurately discerned. To the N lay two small structures roughly 4m in diameter, which may also have been pillboxes. To the SW lay a square structure measuring 2.5m. These features were placed between 37m and 130m W of the high water mark. Three of the features were only faintly visible on aerial photography taken in 1946 [3] and the SW square structure was not visible. Next Perspectives photography taken in 2003 [4] showed all the features to be absent.
These features lay atop an area of WWII barbed wire (MWX43647) and lines of WWII beach scaffolding (MWX43629). A WWII pier lay 100m to the SE (MWX43663).
This site may be represented in the National Monuments Record by the record ‘Second World War reinforced concrete pillbox [Sector 6]. East of Walmer.’ (1428663).
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
