Full Description

Small cluster of WWII military features on the cliff edge at the northern tip of Joss Bay, providing defence over the beach below and good observation over the Channel. These include a rectangular structure (possible pillbox), measuring 3.3m by 3m with a length of slit trenching extending from the south-western side for 20m. More slit trenching is visible just to the north of the structure, with one section being surrounded by banking. A large cut feature has been excavated from the cliff edge forming a platform feature, although its function is unknown. It measures 17m long and 5.7m deep.

Some of the slit trenching was first visible on military aerial photographs taken in January 1941 [1], whereas the rest of the features were first visible and mapped from photographs taken in May 1942 [2]. The structure appears to overlie an earlier possible gun pit that is visible in January 1941 [1]. All of these features are no longer visible by August 1947 [3].

A record for a coastal battery (Mke39278) lies close to this cluster of military features and may be associated

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
