A gas works located close to the coast in Hythe is visible on Epochs 2-4 (1899, 1908 and 1946) of historic 1:2500 Ordnance Survey mapping [1-3]. Structures are evident on the Epoch 4 (1938) edition, however they are unlabelled [4]. The site has been replaced by a sewage works on MasterMap (2009) [5]. According to the Epoch 3 edition [2], the extent of the site covers a maximum area of 118m by 45m.
The feature was given a monument polygon (mapped from the Epoch 3 edition [2]) during historic mapping enhancement as part of Phase 1 of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey.
