A Coastguard Station is visible on the Epoch 2, 3 and 4 (1899, 1908 and 1938) editions of the historic 1:2500 Ordnance Survey mapping [1-3]. It is located on the site of Lade Fort and appears to have reused the existing structure (MKE3780). A footpath extends from the coastguard station to the coastline where a look out is positioned on the Epoch 4 (1938) edition only [3] - visible as a small rectangular structure, measuring 5m by 4m. Both the structures of the look out and the coastguard station are visible on MasterMap (2009), however the coastguard station has been converted into Lade Fort Cottages [4].
The extent of the station and associated structures were given monument polygons (mapped from the Epoch 4 edition [3]) during historic mapping enhancement as part of Phase 1 of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey.
