Monument record MWX44085 - Twydall Casemates, around Holmstone and South Brooks

Two Twydall Casemates are visible only on the Epoch 3 (1909) edition of historic 1:2500 Ordnance Survey mapping [1], and have been given monument polygons during historic mapping enhancement as part of Phase 1 of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey. Epoch 4 (1938) mapping is not available for this area [2], and no such features are visible on MasterMap (2009) [3].
The features are horse-shoe shape in plan and may be constructed of gravel/shingle with a square platform to the SW of the feature. They have maximum dimensions of 29.5m by 26.4m and 34m by 30m.
These features are part of a much wider area of similar features around Holmstone and South Brooks that indicate an early military site used for artillery practices.
