Monument record MWX51325 - Second World War bomb crater, St Marys Bay

A Second World War bomb crater is visible on aerial photographs of 1941 as a hollow amongst the houses at the northern end of St Marys Bay. This feature was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the South East RCZAS NMP project. The bomb crater is centred at TR 0913 2807, and measures approximately six metres in diameter. It has a narrow banked rim around the edge of the perfectly circular crater. It is thought this may be a result of the loose shingle characteristic of the ground in this area, which would have been upcast by the explosion. This area has subsequently been developed for housing, and the site of the bomb crater now lies beneath the road in Dunstall Gardens (1-2).
